Simon Pure Development was formed as a Limited Liability Company in North Carolina in late 2002 to purchase and renovate historic homes. We are based in Chapel Hill, and generally work within Chapel Hill and its immediate environs.
The founding members of the company are Dana F. Shave, P.E., and Robert E. Hykes. In 2004, Bob Hykes sold his share of the company to Sara Duval; however Bob continues a financial involvement and provides valuable advice and counsel. Dana and Sara have renovated a number of houses together, ranging from New England saltboxes (Massachusetts) to French Mansard (Massachusetts), to Cape Cod (New Jersey), to Spanish-California (Southern California). Each has renovated several other properties as well. Since the founding of Simon Pure, they have been intimately involved in the renovation of more than 6 properties in the Chapel Hill area. The intent of the company is to bring to the area a willingness to undertake major renovations of older and historic homes, with an understanding and appreciation of the history found within each project. We try to modernize each house for todays living, yet maintain that comfort and feel that is typically missing from new construction. In 2005 we decided to expand into custom new construction, but only by creating homes that are built in the traditional fashion, with historical styling, and only those which would appeal to the most discriminating buyer.
Simon Pure concentrates on whole house renovations of these older properties, but we will undertake additions and remodeling where we feel that the Client understands and appreciates a very high quality end product which, as our favorite realtor claims contain "interiors to die for". We do not and will not skimp on materials, and we don't really trust a lot of the newer building materials on the market today. We work only on a cost-plus-percentage fee, and provide full and complete services throughout the entire projects. These services range from conceptual design to interior design to construction and final inspection.
Simon Pure prides itself on detailed planning and estimating, and on our attention to cost and schedule control. We treat the funds of others as if they were our own, and always seek best price consistent with the quality of work that we demand. Our estimates are normally very accurate, usually to a few percent - this is particularly hard to do in a renovation environment. We do not let ourselves become pigeonholed into a particular project style, and we strive to differentiate ourselves from the typical remodeling contractor.
Prior to his involvement with Simon Pure Development, Dana, a Registered Professional (Mechanical) Engineer, spent many years in engineering, project management, marketing, and general management roles, all related to highly engineered products. These products were designed and built to the very highest standards and used in critical service applications - thus he is able to appreciate the need for and value of quality. Dana is a Licensed General Contractor in North Carolina, and actively consults to the insurance industry via a nationally recognized forensic engineering firm relating to residential and commercial properties.
Sara spent many years at an architectural design firm, at an interior design firm, and managed the multiple properties of a wealthy individual. She is a Licensed Real Estate Agent and Llicensed Real Estate Broker in North Carolina, has a superb eye for color and flow, and makes a major contribution to the outcome of each project we become involved in.
